Hotel Shanker in Kathmandu is a 19th-century listed palace located within walking distance of the popular Thamel and Durbar Marg, the tourist centers of Kathmandu. It was the royal residence of Nepal’s rulers from 1894 to 1964. The facade was preserved when it was converted into a luxury hotel, but the interiors have been redesigned to offer travelers the comfort they expect from a world-class hotel. In the early 19th century, General Jit Shumsher Rana, brother of H. A. Sri Tin Maharaja Bhir Shumsher Jung Bahadur Rana, commissioned architect Kumar Narsingh Rana to build the most elegant palace in Kathmandu. Items such as gilded mirrors, velvet, marble, and chandeliers were imported from Europe. The exteriors were designed in a neoclassical style. Construction was completed in 1894.
